Courses & Learning

What English courses does Maltalingua offer?

Maltalingua offers General English (Standard, 20 lessons/week, and Intensive, 30 lessons/week), Business English, exam preparation for IELTS and Cambridge (FCE/CAE), one-to-one Private lessons, and Club 30+/50+ courses for mature learners. All adult courses run year-round at our school in St Julian's, Malta, with a maximum of 12 students per class.

How many students are in each class?

Adult classes have a maximum of 12 students — one of the smallest class sizes of any English school in Malta. Junior summer classes are capped at 15. Smaller groups mean more speaking time and individual attention from your teacher in every lesson.

What English levels do you teach?

We teach all levels from complete beginner (A1) to proficiency (C2) on the CEFR scale. General English courses are open to every level; specialist courses such as IELTS preparation or Business English require at least an Intermediate (B1+) level to join.

How do you make sure I'm in the right level?

Before you arrive you take a free online placement test, and on your first morning you complete a short written and spoken assessment. You're then placed in a class matched to your exact level, and teachers can move you up if you progress quickly during your stay.

What's the difference between the Standard and Intensive courses?

The Standard course is 20 lessons per week (mornings), leaving afternoons free for activities and exploring Malta. The Intensive course is 30 lessons per week, adding afternoon lessons in smaller groups for faster progress. Standard costs €234/week and Intensive €343/week.

Do you offer IELTS and Cambridge exam preparation?

Yes. Our Exam Preparation course (30 lessons/week, €349/week) prepares you for IELTS, Cambridge B2 First (FCE) and C1 Advanced (CAE). The IELTS exam itself costs €270 and is booked separately. You'll practise exam technique, timed tasks and all four skills with experienced exam tutors.

Do you offer Business English or private one-to-one lessons?

Yes. Business English (20 lessons/week, €387/week) focuses on meetings, presentations, emails and negotiation. Private one-to-one lessons (€1,100/week for 20 lessons, €1,650 for 30) are fully tailored to your goals and can be combined with any group course.

What course materials are used, and are they included?

All course materials are included in the price — there's nothing extra to buy. Teachers combine modern coursebooks with online resources, handouts and authentic, real-world material so lessons stay practical and relevant to how English is actually used.

How long can I study for?

Courses start every Monday and run from a single week to several months — you choose the length that suits you. Longer stays are cheaper per week: a Standard course drops from €234/week (1 week) to €219/week (4+ weeks).

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. At the end of your course you receive a Maltalingua certificate stating your course, the level you achieved on the CEFR scale and the number of weeks studied. Maltalingua is accredited by EAQUALS, the international benchmark for quality in language education.

Prices & Booking

How much does an English course in Malta cost?

Adult course prices at Maltalingua start from €234/week for Standard General English (20 lessons) and €343/week for Intensive (30 lessons). Business English is €387/week and Exam Preparation €349/week. There are no booking or agency fees, and all course materials are included.

What's included in the price, and what costs extra?

Your course price includes tuition, all materials, the placement test, a welcome orientation and a certificate. Optional extras are accommodation, airport transfers (€25 one-way / €45 return), a high-season supplement of €50/week between 22 June and 28 August 2026, and Malta's eco tax of €0.50/night (capped at €5 per stay).

How do I book a course?

Is a deposit required, and how do I pay?

A 20% deposit secures your place, with the balance due no later than one month before arrival. There are no booking or agency fees. We accept the main international payment methods, and our team will guide you through each step once you've chosen your course and dates.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations must be made in writing and are charged as a percentage of the total booking value on a sliding scale: 20% if you cancel 28 or more days before arrival, 35% at 15–27 days, 50% at 8–14 days, 65% at 3–7 days, 80% at 1–2 days, and 100% for a no-show. Where a 20% reservation deposit applies (including summer and special-offer bookings) that deposit is non-refundable. If a visa is refused you receive a full refund minus 20%, provided the rejection letter reaches us at least 14 days before arrival.

Accommodation & Arrival

What accommodation options does Maltalingua offer?

We offer four options: shared school apartments (our most popular, sociable choice), homestay with an English-speaking host family, "Stay with a Teacher" for full immersion, and 3–5 star hotels including the Hilton and Marriott. All are arranged close to the school in St Julian's. See accommodation.

How do I get from the airport to the school?

We arrange airport transfers so a representative meets you on arrival and takes you to your accommodation — €25 one-way or €45 return. Malta International Airport is about 30 minutes from the school. Public buses are also available if you prefer to travel independently.

Where is the school located?

Maltalingua is at 2 Birkirkara Hill, St Julian's — a lively seaside town on Malta's central coast, minutes from the beaches, restaurants and nightlife of St George's Bay and Sliema. The adult school has its own rooftop pool with sea views.

Eligibility & Visas

What is the minimum age to study at Maltalingua?

Adult courses are for students aged 18 and over. Younger learners aged 8–17 are welcome on our supervised Junior Summer School. There is no upper age limit, and our Club 30+/50+ courses are designed specifically for mature learners.

Do I need a visa to study English in Malta?

Malta is part of the EU and the Schengen Area, so EU/EEA citizens need no visa. Many other nationalities can study visa-free for short stays, while some require a Schengen short-stay visa or a national visa for longer courses. Check our visa information for your country.

Does Maltalingua help with visa documentation?

Yes. Once you've booked, we provide the official Letter of Acceptance, proof of accommodation and other supporting documents you need for your visa application. Our team guides you through the requirements, though the final decision always rests with the relevant embassy or consulate.

Junior / Under-18 Courses

Do you offer English courses for under-18s?

Yes. Our Junior Summer School in St Paul's Bay welcomes learners aged 8–17 with English lessons, a full activity and excursion programme, and supervised accommodation with meals included. Classes have a maximum of 15 students. See Junior Summer 2026.

How are junior students supervised?

Junior students are supervised by trained staff throughout their stay, with a high staff-to-student ratio covering lessons, activities, meals and evenings. We also offer escorted "Supported Flights" so unaccompanied minors are met and accompanied on key routes — giving parents complete peace of mind.

Life in Malta & Practical

What activities and excursions are available?

There's a full programme of activities every week — boat trips, island excursions to Gozo and Comino, historical tours of Valletta and Mdina, beach days, sports and evening socials. Our student coordinator helps you book everything and arranges transport and schedules.

Will I have internet and Wi-Fi access?

Yes. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the school, and there are study rooms with computers for research and homework. Malta has strong, widely available mobile and internet coverage across the islands.

When is the best time to study English in Malta?

You can study year-round — courses start every Monday. Malta enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, with hot summers (June–September) ideal for the beach and mild, quieter winters perfect for focused study and lower prices. A high-season supplement of €50/week applies from 22 June to 28 August 2026.

What language do people speak in Malta?

What support is available during my stay?

A dedicated student coordinator helps with everything from activities and excursions to day-to-day questions, and welfare support is available throughout your stay. Our reception team is on hand Monday to Friday, 08:00–18:00, and you'll have a clear point of contact from the moment you arrive.
