Homestay – Important Information

Homestay – Important Information

Your homestay will be your home in Malta. Maltalingua, together with your homestay, want you to have a fun and pleasant stay, so our team is available for you 24 hours a day.

To help ensure that you are comfortable in your accommodation, it is important that you follow our rules and regulations.

Should you have any queries during your stay, please talk to your homestay and group leaders immediately. We are here to support you and offer assistance in anything you need.

1. Your Homestay

You are to consider yourself as part of the homestay household. Please always act in a friendly, responsible, respectful and appreciative manner towards your homestay, their lifestyle and their property.

You are encouraged to speak English all the time and to participate in the daily life of the home. Tell your homestay about your interests and friends, your daily lessons and activities, your happiness and your problems.

Your homestay will describe their house rules on your first day. Please make sure you follow all their rules and are always on time for meals. Your homestay will ask you about your diet and your likes and dislikes. If you need more food, feel free to ask.

Be friendly with all other students who may be living with you in the homestay and practise English with them. If possible, go out and return home together.

2. Tidiness of Room

You are responsible for keeping your room, including the bathroom, in proper order after use. Your room has been inspected and found to be appropriately furnished and clean before your arrival. You are sharing a room with others and must respect their wishes regarding room tidiness.

You are provided with enough wardrobe and drawer space to store your personal belongings as well as a desk with proper lighting which may be used for study purposes. Your bed linen and towels will be changed at least once a week.

You are entitled to free laundry service once per week. Please speak to your homestay to arrange this. Please note that water in Malta is a very scarce and valuable resource — use great care when using the bathroom.

You will be provided with a fan in your room between 1 May and 30 September. Please remember to switch the fan and lights off when you are not in your room.

3. Internet

Free Wi-Fi is available in your homestay. Speak to your homestay for details.

4. Social & Leisure Programme

You must attend ALL included activities. The weekly programme is available in your welcome pack or handed out to you on a weekly basis. Further information or changes to the programme will be communicated via your group leader.

Responsible 16- and 17-year-olds may opt out of specific optional activities with the written consent of Maltalingua, their homestay and their parents.

Sunday is usually a free day for all students. Students already in Malta have time to relax and unwind from the week, while students arriving at the weekend have time to settle into their homestay.

5. Free Time (For Your Safety)

If you would like to go out during free time, you must inform your homestay where you are going and who you are going with. You are not allowed to have a house key and must follow your homestay’s instructions.

Your mobile phone must be fully charged and with you at all times. Always carry your student ID with contact numbers and return address, and travel in groups.

Curfew times:

13 to 15 years oldWeekdays until 22:00 Weekends until 23:00

Responsible 16- and 17-year-olds may be granted a 1-hour extension on Fridays and Saturdays with the written consent of Maltalingua, their homestay and their parents.

6. Maltalingua Documents

You must take care of all documents supplied in your welcome pack, such as your Maltalingua Student Card. These documents are not transferable and should be stored safely.

You must carry your Maltalingua Student Card at all times. It will be requested to attend Maltalingua events.

On arrival you will receive a wristband. It is very important that you wear it at all times. Damaged wristbands are replaced free of charge; lost wristbands cost €5.00 to replace.

7. Doctor

If you need a doctor during your stay in Malta, contact your group leader or homestay immediately. You are responsible for paying the doctor’s visit, transport and any medicines. Always ask for a receipt — these expenses may be reclaimed through your travel/medical insurance on return home.

EU citizens may access free public healthcare with a valid EU health card, but waiting times are usually significantly longer.

8. School Times

Classes normally run Monday–Friday from 09:30 to 13:00 (with a break in the middle), but timings may change to accommodate weather-dependent or seasonal activities. Any changes will be communicated by your group leader or teacher.

9. Behaviour

It is essential that you follow the rules and behave appropriately at all times. Failure to do so may result in up to 5 strikes. Parents will be informed if 3 or more strikes are issued. Five strikes may lead to immediate expulsion and repatriation at your own expense, with no refund from Maltalingua.

Your safety and well-being are our top priority.

10. Alcohol, Drugs and Smoking

Maltalingua junior students are NOT permitted to smoke, vape, drink alcohol or use any recreational drugs. These actions are illegal for minors in Malta and will result in immediate disciplinary action and possible involvement of the authorities.

Rooms are checked regularly. Any prohibited items found will be confiscated and serious disciplinary measures applied.

11. Departure

On the Thursday before departure, your group leader will inform you of your transfer time. Please check that the flight details are correct. Transfers are scheduled approximately 3 hours before your flight departure. Wait for your transfer at the homestay.

Please inform your homestay of your departure time and be ready when the transfer arrives.

We hope you enjoy your experience in your homestay and wish you a pleasant stay in Malta!
